Spring Cleaning Smile Tips

Spring brings rain, new life, and seasonal activities! After Daylight Savings, St. Patrick’s Day, and March Madness this month, it won’t be long before households start spring cleaning, pranksters plan their best practical jokes for April Fool’s Day, and children eat candy they’ve gathered from an Easter egg hunt. As dental professionals, we want to share a few words of advice to help you and your family keep your oral health in great shape this upcoming season.

Rinse Between Sips

Do you enjoy drinking refreshing spring cocktails, mocktails, smoothies, or punch this time of year? If your drink contains alcohol, heavily pigmented mixes, and/or acidic fruits, you want to take steps to prevent teeth staining. Drink from a straw and rinse your mouth with water between sips. Water can help wash away particles that might otherwise increase your risk of tooth decay and tooth stains.

Maintain Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Cleaning, sports, and holiday gatherings this spring may leave you feeling exhausted by the time bedtime comes around. While it’s tempting to head straight for your bed at night, make sure you and your children have brushed and flossed beforehand. You don’t want all the bacteria and food particles that have accumulated in your mouth during the day to sit there as you sleep, especially if you’ve been eating any Easter candy! Brushing and flossing only takes a couple of minutes. Investing in an electric toothbrush, water flosser, and comfortable bathroom rug can make your routine feel like less of a chore.
